Finding the right combination of tracks for a playlist is a difficult task. It’s been an over a month and a half since we released the last edition in our on-going In Rotation series.

We’ve been sourcing an incredible collection of music that will have an impact on your musical journey. In Rotation: Night Shift, first drew inspiration from the opening track off Drake’s More Life playlist. Track 1 “Free Smoke“, starts off with an incredible vocal performance from Hiatus Kaiyote lead singer Nai Palm.

“Free Smoke” samples the full Hiatus Kaiyote track “Building a Ladder”. In an interview with Bonafide Magazine, Nai Palm reinforced the power of the Austrailian band’s uplifting message on their album:

“It’s kind of like a release after going through something hard, not just on the album but personal trials and tribulations. I actually really loved the lack of perfection in it you can hear – it takes courage to show your humanity, when some of [the album] is so polished. Music is about overcoming things. I feel like music tends to get stuck on the wallowing. Ideally I want to try and help people through it, by embracing it and growing through it and I’m really conscious of that – to have the perspective at least by the end of the song.”

That message is carried through the entirety of this 12-track playlist. You can hear that same uplifting spirit on Amber Mark’s “Can You Hear Me?” (Track 8). Mark channeled her mother’s loss into an inspiring track that doesn’t wallow in grief.

The final track, Wale’s “Smile” is an excellent bookend to In Rotation: Night Shift. It is the perfect reminder that there always a reason to smile.
